Covers are exciting!

Aside from actually writing a story, one of my favorite parts of publishing is receiving the cover art. With a few phrases and points provided to the cover artist, they make the image in my head come to life. My new story, Caught Up in Candy Cane Kisses, (release date coming soon!), is no exception. The Wild Rose Press cover artist, RJ Morris, seemed to read my mind when it came to this design.

I am absolutely in love with it! The models depict my characters well, and the background lends an aspect of the setting and period the story resides in: Christmas time. The cookies also represent a big element in the story. One might wonder, how can cookies help a romance? Hopefully soon, you'll be able to find out!
What do you look for in a cover? What makes you pick up that book from the store shelf? Are there any aspects you find more compelling?
For me, I enjoy seeing characters, getting a sense of the environment or time period of the book, something eye-catching that's inherent to the storyline. I like to be hooked in to picking a book off the shelf by its cover. I truly hope my readers feel similar when they look at my covers.
